In a world increasingly aware of the environment and animal rights, vegan food is no longer the only focus. Vegan fashion is also emerging as a beacon of hope in the textile industry. This is not just a passing trend but a movement rooted in ethical and sustainable values that resonates with a growing number of people worldwide.

Every day, more individuals choose clothing and accessories that reflect not only their style and elegance but also their moral convictions. The idea of wearing products free of animal cruelty and environmentally friendly has become a symbol of empowerment and awareness for many.

In this context, the search for sustainable and eco-friendly materials becomes imperative. This is where LaserFood’s disruptive innovation comes in: vegan leather made from persimmon production waste. This bold approach to sustainability and creativity is making a milestone in fashion history, challenging conventional norms and opening new possibilities for a more ethical and sustainable future.

Goodbye to Animal Leather

In a bold move towards sustainability and innovation, the Valencia-based company LaserFood is revolutionizing the fashion world with a new trend: vegan leather made from persimmon production waste and surplus. Led by CEO Jaime Sanfelix and his technical team, this initiative addresses the alarming reality that more than 50% of persimmon production is wasted.

From their innovation labs at the Parc Científic de la Universitat de València, the LaserFood team has been dedicated to finding ways to valorize this waste. After extensive research, they identified vegan leather as a promising option, given its growing acceptance among conscious consumers.

The resulting product, called Persiskin, is a 100% natural substitute for animal leather, far surpassing existing blends in the market that barely reach 15% plant content. Sanfelix emphasizes that the product remains true to its natural roots, with plant content never below 80%, making it an attractive option for environmentally and ethically conscious consumers.

Until now, leather production and its synthetic alternatives have been resource-intensive and involved materials and techniques with significant environmental impacts:

  • Extensive use of resources such as fuel, water, land, and food.
  • The use of harmful chemicals during production, posing risks to both workers’ health and the environment.
  • Production of large amounts of waste during tanning.
  • The use of synthetic materials that take many years to decompose and release toxins in the process.

However, Persiskin offers a radically different alternative with a considerably lower environmental impact and distinctive features:

  • No additional environmental resources are required beyond the original raw material.
  • No chemicals or prohibited substances are used in vegan leather production.
  • The production process operates in a closed loop: persimmon harvest leftovers and surpluses are used to create the final product.

With optimistic growth projections, LaserFood aims to establish a new industry in the persimmon production area, in the Ribera del Xúqer Designation of Origin. This initiative promotes a circular economy and has the potential to create hundreds or even thousands of jobs in the region.

Regarding investment, the company has allocated €500,000 to patenting and product development, with plans to invest up to an additional €2 million in the production phase, scheduled to start in May this year. With a first factory in Alginet on the horizon, LaserFood is ready to bring its innovative material to the market and lead the way to a more sustainable and ethical fashion future.

Promoting Sustainability and Animal Welfare

LaserFood’s revolutionary innovation in producing vegan leather from persimmon production waste is not only changing the fashion game but also marking a milestone in the fight for environmental sustainability and animal welfare.

By offering an ethical and sustainable alternative to animal leather, this initiative plays a crucial role in reducing the demand for animal-based products, including meat consumption, a major driver of deforestation and environmental degradation.

Simultaneously, by using agricultural residual materials, LaserFood promotes more responsible practices and a circular economy in the textile industry, contributing to natural resource conservation and climate change mitigation.

This comprehensive approach to more sustainable and ethical fashion reflects growing awareness of the environmental and ethical impacts of our consumption choices, pointing the way toward a fairer and more equitable future for the planet and all its inhabitants.
