Retina ECO Awards 2025: Innovations Driving Sustainable Homes
The Retina ECO Awards 2025, organized by PRISA Media in collaboration with Capgemini, have stood out this year for recognizing pioneering technological solutions in sustainability and climate action. In its fifth edition, winners represent initiatives that deliver not only innovation but tangible and scalable environmental impact. Here we analyze the awarded projects and why they are key to promoting eco-friendly homes and an effective ecological transition.
1. Ecological Brick — La Paloma Cerámica y Gres
In the category SMEs in Sustainability Innovation, one winner was Ecological Brick by La Paloma Cerámica y Gres. It is the first brick in the European Union made with 100% recycled materials, reducing up to 50% CO₂ emissions in production. This solution advances construction materials while directly improving energy efficiency and reducing the carbon footprint in sustainable homes.
2. Heavy Mobility, Light Impact — Muelles y Ballestas Hispano Alemanas
Also in this category, Heavy Mobility, Light Impact by Muelles y Ballestas Hispano Alemanas was awarded for lightening heavy vehicles to reduce fuel consumption. Combining composite materials with steel, it achieves significant weight reduction without compromising durability, directly cutting emissions in the heavy transport sector.
3. O-Next — Tubos Reunidos Group
In Green Energy & Resources, the award went to O-Next, the first seamless steel tube produced with zero CO₂ emissions. Renewable energy, biogas, and recycled steel make this possible. This project is a milestone for industrial decarbonization and a reference for sustainable construction and infrastructure.
4. Ecoenergies Barcelona — Veolia Spain / Barcelona City Council
The Public Sustainable Innovation award went to Ecoenergies Barcelona, led by Veolia Spain and the City Council. The project provides eco-friendly gas, heating, and cooling through LNG regasification and urban biomass systems, offering a replicable urban solution for energy efficiency.
5. eCity — Endesa with Sevilla, Málaga, and Granada
In Smart Mobility, eCity by Endesa and the city councils of Sevilla, Málaga, and Granada was recognized. The project aims to make areas like Isla de la Cartuja in Sevilla 100% renewable, expanding the model to tech parks and residential neighborhoods. Key strategies include renewable generation, electric mobility, energy efficiency, and AI.
6. Semillas Fitó — Innovation in Sustainable Ecosystem
The Sustainable Ecosystem award went to Semillas Fitó, which developed seed varieties reducing up to 12% carbon, water, energy, and chemical footprint per ton. They created a proprietary horticulture methodology to quantify environmental impact, essential for more sustainable agriculture aligned with ecological goals.
