The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility marks a milestone in its commitment to sustainability by approving the Energy Efficiency Strategy for the State Road Network.

This ambitious initiative aims to drastically reduce both electricity consumption and emissions by 50% across the road network by 2030. With a planned investment of 457 million euros, the strategy seeks to modernize road infrastructure and promote more sustainable practices in the transport sector.

Lighting transformation: Efficiency and safety on the roads

Modernizing the road lighting system is a key part of the Energy Efficiency Strategy.

The plan proposes replacing outdated sodium vapor lamps with cutting-edge LED technology. Additionally, intelligent lighting management systems will be implemented to optimize performance.

These measures not only improve energy efficiency but also enhance road safety and reduce long-term costs. The transition is projected to generate substantial energy savings, estimated between 50% and 80% compared to conventional lighting systems.

Vehicle renewal: Driving sustainable mobility

Another core element of the strategy is the gradual renewal of the vehicle fleet of the General Directorate of Roads.

With the clear goal of promoting electric mobility, by 2030 at least 55% of the fleet is expected to consist of electric or hybrid vehicles. This ambitious transition will not only reduce carbon emissions but also encourage the adoption of cleaner, environmentally friendly technologies in the transport sector.

Promoting sustainability: Long-term environmental commitment

Beyond modernization measures, the Energy Efficiency Strategy includes concrete actions to promote sustainable practices in road management and maintenance.

A key initiative involves integrating sustainability clauses into procurement processes for companies providing road maintenance and operation services. These clauses aim to boost energy efficiency and minimize the environmental impact of road activities.

To ensure the effectiveness and feasibility of these measures, a comprehensive Action Plan is planned.

This carefully designed plan will outline specific strategies to achieve energy efficiency goals and review and update the investment required for project implementation. In this way, a solid and adaptable roadmap will be established, capable of effectively responding to future transport challenges and changes.
