Cambodia Tiger Reintroduction: The Challenge of Bringing Tigers Back to the Wild

The Cambodia tiger reintroduction project is shaping up to become one of Asia’s most ambitious wildlife conservation initiatives. Nearly two decades after the country’s last confirmed sighting of a wild tiger, Cambodia is preparing to restore one of its most iconic predators by relocating animals from India as early as 2027.

The effort represents far more than simply transporting a handful of tigers across borders. Conservationists agree that its success will depend on restoring the conditions necessary for a self-sustaining population, including abundant prey, effective anti-poaching measures, connected forest habitats, and the support of the communities living alongside these protected landscapes.

A conservation project back on track

Cambodia’s last confirmed wild tiger was photographed by camera traps in 2007. After years without additional evidence, the government officially declared the species functionally extinct in 2016, meaning that no viable breeding population remained in the country, even if isolated individuals could still have survived.

Authorities originally hoped to begin the reintroduction process in 2024. However, concerns about habitat readiness and the suspension of a carbon credit initiative that was expected to help finance the project forced officials to postpone the timeline.

In May 2026, Cambodia’s Ministry of Environment approved a revised roadmap that could see the first tigers arrive in 2027. Funding negotiations are still underway, with preliminary estimates placing the project’s total cost at approximately $43 million through 2030.

India will provide the first tigers

India has emerged as Cambodia’s key conservation partner thanks to its remarkable success in tiger recovery. According to the country’s official 2022 tiger census, India is now home to approximately 3,682 wild tigers, the largest tiger population anywhere in the world.

The initial phase of the project calls for relocating one male and three female tigers to the Cardamom Mountains, one of Southeast Asia’s largest remaining tropical forest ecosystems.

Before their release into the wild, the animals will spend time inside a semi-wild enclosure covering roughly 40 hectares. This adaptation period will allow wildlife experts to monitor their health, behavior, and ability to adjust to local environmental conditions before they are fully released.

Why tigers disappeared from Cambodia

The disappearance of Cambodia’s tiger population resulted from decades of intense pressure. Poaching driven by the illegal wildlife trade dramatically reduced tiger numbers, while widespread habitat loss and forest fragmentation further accelerated their decline.

Expanding agriculture, infrastructure development, and illegal logging reduced the amount of suitable habitat available for large predators, making it increasingly difficult for tigers to survive and reproduce.

Conservation experts emphasize that simply releasing new animals without addressing these threats would likely lead to failure. Long-term habitat protection remains the foundation of any successful reintroduction program.

Healthy prey populations are essential

A large protected forest alone is not enough to sustain tigers. These apex predators depend on abundant populations of deer, wild boar, and other medium-sized mammals.

Some researchers believe recent camera trap surveys indicate that prey numbers have recovered sufficiently to support the first releases. Others remain more cautious, warning that if food resources prove insufficient, relocated tigers may roam far beyond protected areas in search of prey.

Such movements could increase the risk of conflicts with livestock, nearby villages, or road traffic, creating new challenges for wildlife managers and local communities alike.

Bengal tigers replacing Indochinese tigers

One of the project’s most interesting scientific aspects is that the relocated animals will be Bengal tigers, while Cambodia’s historic population belonged to the Indochinese tiger group.

Although both belong to the same species, Panthera tigris, they represent distinct geographic populations with some genetic differences. As a result, conservationists must carefully evaluate the ecological suitability of every animal before relocation.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) recommends that all wildlife translocations include detailed assessments of genetics, disease risks, ecological compatibility, and animal behavior before any release takes place.

Local communities play a vital role

The long-term success of the Cambodia tiger reintroduction program will depend heavily on the people living near protected forests. Many rural families rely on forest resources such as resin, fruit, and medicinal plants, making coexistence with large predators an important concern.

Some residents have questioned whether investing tens of millions of dollars in tiger conservation is justified, while others mistakenly believe the animals will remain permanently inside fenced enclosures instead of eventually roaming free.

To address these concerns, conservation organizations are developing public education campaigns, community consultations, livestock compensation mechanisms, and rapid response protocols designed to reduce conflicts between people and wildlife.

Environmental and economic benefits

Restoring tigers could deliver significant ecological benefits beyond saving a single species. As apex predators, tigers help maintain balanced ecosystems by regulating prey populations and supporting healthy forests, rivers, and biodiversity.

Protecting tiger habitat also safeguards countless other species that share the same ecosystem, making the project an important investment in Cambodia’s natural heritage.

There are economic opportunities as well. Recent research suggests that tiger-related ecotourism could generate more than $5 million annually during the project’s first five years and exceed $7 million per year over the following decade, while creating hundreds of local jobs.

However, researchers caution that these figures represent projections rather than guarantees. Unlike open savannah safari destinations, Cambodia’s dense tropical forests are likely to make tiger sightings relatively rare.

What must happen before 2027

Before the first tigers arrive from India, Cambodia must secure full funding, complete habitat restoration efforts, strengthen anti-poaching patrols, confirm healthy prey populations, and carry out comprehensive veterinary and genetic assessments.

Authorities must also continue working closely with local communities to ensure they understand the project’s goals and benefit from its long-term success.

The Cambodia tiger reintroduction initiative represents a historic opportunity to restore one of Southeast Asia’s most iconic predators. Yet conservationists stress that transporting four tigers will be the easiest part of the process. The real challenge lies in rebuilding an ecosystem capable of supporting future generations of wild tigers. If Cambodia succeeds, 2027 could mark the beginning of one of the world’s most significant wildlife restoration projects and provide a powerful model for species recovery across the globe.
