Ibiza Cuts Energy Consumption by 41% with New LED Street Lighting
Ibiza has taken an important step towards a more sustainable urban model with the renovation of its public lighting system through high-efficiency LED technology. The replacement of traditional lamps with modern LED solutions will reduce municipal energy consumption by 41.5%, lower greenhouse gas emissions and improve the management of urban lighting.
The project is part of Ibiza’s energy efficiency strategy and has been financed through the European Next Generation EU funds, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. This initiative represents one of the municipality’s most significant actions in terms of energy transition and environmental protection.
The modernization of public lighting not only generates economic savings for local authorities but also provides important environmental benefits by reducing electricity consumption, optimizing available resources and helping the city adapt to current climate challenges.
Ibiza modernizes public lighting with efficient LED technology
The renovation project has replaced 1,475 traditional light points with new-generation LED fixtures. These installations have been designed to provide better energy performance, higher-quality urban lighting and a significant reduction in maintenance costs.
LED technology has become one of the most effective solutions for improving energy efficiency in cities and municipalities. Compared with conventional lighting systems, LED fixtures consume less electricity, have a much longer lifespan and allow more accurate control of lighting intensity.

One of the main objectives of the project was to reduce the electricity consumption associated with public lighting. Thanks to LED technology, Ibiza will lower its annual electricity use from 593,776 kilowatt-hours to 347,337 kilowatt-hours.
This represents an estimated energy reduction of 41.5% compared with the previous lighting system, generating savings in both operating costs and overall energy demand.
Installed power will also decrease from 134.5 kilowatts to 92.3 kilowatts, representing a reduction of approximately 31.4%. This improvement demonstrates the higher efficiency of the new system and a better use of available energy resources.
From an environmental perspective, the renovation will prevent the emission of around 64 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year. This reduction contributes to European decarbonization targets and strengthens Ibiza’s commitment to fighting climate change.
Smart systems allow real-time lighting management
The modernization of Ibiza’s public lighting system goes beyond replacing old lamps. The project also includes the implementation of advanced remote management systems that allow intelligent monitoring and control of the entire lighting network.
A total of 23 electrical control panels have been upgraded with new protection, monitoring and management technologies. Through these systems, the local government will be able to monitor lighting performance in real time and adjust operation according to the needs of each area.
Smart management makes it possible to reduce lighting intensity during periods of lower activity, detect failures more quickly and improve maintenance efficiency.
These technologies are part of the smart city model, where digital solutions are used to optimize public resources, reduce costs and improve citizens’ quality of life.
Lower light pollution and more sustainable urban lighting
Beyond energy savings, LED technology provides additional environmental benefits related to urban lighting quality.
The new fixtures use a 3,000 Kelvin colour temperature, providing warmer lighting that improves visual comfort and helps reduce light pollution. This aspect is particularly relevant in Ibiza, where protecting the natural environment and preserving the night landscape are important ecological and tourism priorities.
LED systems allow light to be directed more accurately towards areas that require illumination, reducing unnecessary light dispersion into the sky and limiting potential impacts on nocturnal ecosystems.
The new fixtures also have a lifespan of more than 100,000 hours, which means fewer replacements, less waste generation and a lower environmental impact associated with maintenance operations.
