Mediterranean Climate Warming Could Reach 5.6°C By 2100
The Mediterranean region is warming significantly faster than the planet as a whole, increasing the pressure on ecosystems, water resources, agriculture and coastal communities across the basin. Scientific assessments indicate that average temperatures are already around 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
The pace of change is also unusually rapid. The Mediterranean is warming about 20% faster than the global average on an annual basis, while summer warming is projected to be even more pronounced. The scale of future warming will depend heavily on how greenhouse-gas emissions evolve over the coming decades.
Higher Emissions Could Produce Much Greater Warming
Climate projections show a wide range of possible outcomes. The Mediterranean Assessment Report estimates that land temperatures could increase by between 0.9°C and 1.5°C during the 21st century under a low-emissions pathway, compared with as much as 3.7°C to 5.6°C under a high-emissions scenario.
The IPCC likewise projects that annual mean warming across Mediterranean land areas could reach up to 5.6°C by the end of the century, depending on the emissions pathway. The region is expected to continue warming faster than the global average, with particularly strong increases during summer.
Heat, Drought and Water Stress Are Expected to Intensify
Rising temperatures are already associated with more frequent and intense heat extremes across the Mediterranean. Future warming is expected to increase the duration and intensity of heat waves, while changes in rainfall patterns could place additional pressure on water supplies.
The region also faces interconnected risks involving drought, wildfires, agriculture and coastal areas. The IPCC identifies water scarcity, coastal flooding and erosion, ecosystem losses, risks to food production and impacts on human health among the key climate-related threats facing the Mediterranean.
For countries whose economies depend heavily on agriculture, coastal activity and tourism, these changes could have consequences extending beyond the environment. The Mediterranean is also one of the world’s major tourism regions, meaning prolonged heat, water shortages and ecosystem degradation could affect destinations and communities that depend on visitors.
Climate Risks Extend Across the Mediterranean Basin
The Mediterranean includes countries across southern Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, creating substantial differences in exposure and vulnerability. Nevertheless, the overall warming trend affects both land and sea, with marine ecosystems facing additional pressure from rising water temperatures and ocean acidification.
The United Nations Environment Programme notes that the Mediterranean is home to more than 510 million people and faces growing risks from climate change, including coastal flooding, erosion and the salinization of freshwater resources. Regional experts have also warned that environmental pressures are likely to compound existing vulnerabilities in ecosystems and economies.
The projected range of warming illustrates how strongly future conditions depend on emissions. Limiting greenhouse-gas emissions can substantially reduce the scale of temperature increases, while higher-emissions pathways would expose the region to much greater heat and associated environmental risks.
