Organic production in Spain: growth, leadership and global impact
Spain has become a global benchmark in organic production, thanks to sustained growth and the diversification of its crops and products. In 2023, the country reached 4.94 million tonnes, representing an increase of 47.9% compared to the previous year. This growth shows that organic production in Spain is not a short-term phenomenon, but a strategic, sustainable model with strong international potential.
Economic boost from organic agriculture
The growth of organic agriculture is not limited to volume; it is also reflected in the economic value of the sector. In 2023, Spanish organic production reached €5.962 billion, an increase of 77.9% compared to 2022.
Domestic consumption also showed strong figures: Spaniards spent €2.916 billion on organic food, a 9.8% increase year on year, representing 3.36% of total food consumption and an average spending of €60.65 per person. This rise reflects a growing awareness of healthy and sustainable food, aligned with global responsible consumption trends.
Consumption and evolution of sales channels
Among the most in-demand organic products are fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, eggs and milk. Consumer preference reflects increasing interest in healthy and natural food, prioritising quality and traceability.
Regarding distribution channels, supermarkets, discount stores and online commerce have gained importance, while traditional hypermarkets have lost market share. This shift reflects more conscious consumption, driven by convenience, variety and digital access.
Spain leads the EU in organic farming area
In terms of land dedicated to organic crops, Spain leads the European Union, surpassing historic producers such as France. In 2023, organic farmland reached almost 3 million hectares (2,991,881 ha), with an 11.8% increase year on year.
Spain stands out globally in key crops: it has the largest organic area of olive groves and vineyards, with 292,868 ha and 166,286 ha respectively, ranks third in citrus fruits and sixth in vegetables. This consolidates its position as a sustainable agricultural powerhouse.
International recognition: sixth largest producer worldwide
Globally, Spain ranks sixth in organic production, behind Australia, India, Argentina, Uruguay and China. This reflects the country’s competitiveness and leadership in sustainable agriculture.
Organic exports and trade balance
The boom in organic production is also reflected in international trade. In 2023, organic exports reached €3.047 billion, growing 82.6% compared to 2022 and generating a positive trade balance of €1.567 billion.
Main destinations include Germany, France, the Netherlands, the United States, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Canada and Japan. This positions Spain as a leading exporter of organic products worldwide.
Expanding organic livestock farming
The organic livestock sector recorded 18.24% growth, particularly in cattle farming, with over 11,000 farms. This expansion confirms that organic livestock farming fits perfectly into Spain’s sustainability strategy.
Public policies and institutional support
The development of organic production is backed by strong institutional support, including financial incentives, technical assistance and measures to promote consumption and marketing, as well as food waste prevention laws.
Future outlook for organic production in Spain
The future of organic production in Spain is promising, driven by domestic and international demand, technological innovation, crop diversification and institutional commitment to sustainability.
Spain is emerging as a model of responsible agriculture, where sustainability, profitability and food quality converge.
