Desertification in Spain: An Environmental and Economic Challenge

Desertification in Spain has become one of the country’s major environmental, economic and social challenges linked to climate change. The term does not mean that Spain will literally turn into a desert like the Sahara. Instead, it refers to the degradation of land in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas, resulting in a gradual loss of soil productivity, organic matter, biodiversity and the ability of ecosystems to support certain human activities.

The issue is particularly important in Spain because of the country’s geographical and climatic characteristics. Large areas are exposed to water stress, high temperatures and irregular rainfall patterns. These conditions are compounded by factors such as soil erosion, wildfires, the overexploitation of water resources in some areas, certain intensive agricultural practices and rural depopulation and land abandonment.

The book “España contra el desierto” (“Spain Against the Desert”), by Emilio Santiago and Héctor Tejero, examines this challenge from a perspective that connects the climate emergency with its economic and social consequences. Its central argument is that Spain is particularly exposed to global warming, but also has resources and capabilities that could help the country transition towards a more resilient economic and environmental model.

What is desertification and why does it affect Spain?

Desertification is a process of land degradation that primarily affects regions with dry climatic conditions. Although natural factors can contribute to it, human activities and climate change can significantly intensify its effects.

In Spain, the risk is particularly relevant across parts of the Mediterranean region, southeastern Spain and other areas characterized by limited or highly irregular rainfall. The loss of vegetation, erosion caused by intense rainfall, prolonged droughts and rising temperatures can reduce the soil’s ability to retain water and maintain its productivity.

The problem is not limited to the environmental sphere. Degraded soils can affect agricultural production, increase vulnerability to certain extreme events and make ecosystem recovery more difficult. When these pressures accumulate, their consequences can extend to local economies and the quality of life of rural communities.

Climate change is increasing pressure on Spanish territory

Global warming is one of the main factors that could worsen desertification in Spain. Rising temperatures increase evaporation and can raise the water requirements of crops and ecosystems.

At the same time, changing precipitation patterns can create a particularly challenging combination: longer periods of drought followed, in some cases, by episodes of very intense rainfall. Heavy rainfall does not necessarily compensate for a prolonged drought, particularly when soils are degraded and unable to absorb large quantities of water effectively.

Wildfires are another major risk factor. The destruction of vegetation leaves soil more exposed to erosion and can make recovery more difficult, especially when intense rainfall follows a fire. For this reason, wildfire prevention, ecosystem restoration and appropriate land management are essential components of any effective strategy against desertification.

The economic consequences of desertification

Land degradation has an economic dimension that is often overlooked compared with its environmental effects. Agriculture is one of the sectors most directly exposed because it depends on water availability, soil quality and relatively predictable climatic conditions.

More frequent droughts, heatwaves and extreme weather events can reduce agricultural yields, increase production costs and create additional demand for investment in irrigation, adaptation and water management.

The effects can also spread to other economic activities. Tourism, for example, depends in many regions on environmental and climatic conditions that are changing. Water availability, wildfire risk and rising temperatures could influence the competitiveness and habitability of certain destinations.

Extreme weather events can also generate substantial costs for governments, businesses and households. Damage to infrastructure, homes, agricultural land and transport networks requires resources for prevention, repair and recovery.

Spain also has significant advantages for adaptation

The current situation does not mean that desertification is an unavoidable outcome. Spain faces considerable climate vulnerability, but it also has strategic advantages that could help reduce its exposure to future risks.

One of these advantages is the country’s potential for renewable energy production. High levels of solar radiation make solar photovoltaic power one of the technologies with significant development potential in Spain. Expanding renewable energy can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions while also supporting energy security and competitiveness.

However, the energy transition should not be viewed as an isolated solution. Territorial planning is essential to ensure that renewable energy projects are compatible with ecosystem conservation, agricultural activity and the interests of local communities.

Organic and regenerative agriculture as part of the solution

Transforming the agricultural and food system is another major area of action. Regenerative agriculture seeks to improve soil health through practices designed to strengthen soil structure, increase organic matter, reduce erosion and improve the ability of soil to retain water.

Strategies that can contribute to these goals include the use of cover crops, crop diversification, reducing certain forms of soil disturbance, incorporating organic matter and improving water efficiency.

There is no single technique that can be applied to every farm. Effective solutions need to take into account local climate conditions, soil characteristics, crops and the economic circumstances of each agricultural operation.

Organic farming can also contribute to this transition, although the two concepts are not identical. Organic farming operates within a specific production and certification framework, while regenerative agriculture places particular emphasis on restoring soil health and ecological functions.

A strategy combining energy, water and land management

Addressing desertification in Spain requires action on several fronts simultaneously. Improving water management, restoring degraded ecosystems, preventing wildfires, protecting agricultural soils and reducing greenhouse gas emissions should all form part of an integrated strategy.

Adaptation in cities and rural areas will also become increasingly important. Land management, urban planning and the conservation of natural resources can significantly influence Spain’s ability to cope with a warmer climate.

The challenge is therefore to move from policies focused primarily on responding to damage after it occurs towards an approach that gives greater importance to prevention, adaptation and restoration.

Spain faces a strategic choice

The message behind “España contra el desierto” should not necessarily be interpreted as a prediction of an inevitable future, but rather as a warning about the decisions that will shape Spain over the coming decades.

Spain combines several factors that increase its vulnerability to climate change with conditions that could support the expansion of renewable energy, agricultural transformation and more efficient management of natural resources.

The key question is how these advantages will be used. The energy transition, soil conservation, sustainable water management and ecosystem restoration can become not only environmental policies but also tools for protecting economic activity and reducing future risks.

Ultimately, tackling desertification requires recognizing that soil, water, energy and the economy are closely interconnected. Spain cannot completely control how the climate evolves, but it can decide how effectively it prepares its territory, businesses, farmers and communities for the consequences.
